This theme comes up, it seems, on a regular basis - I have to admit the Twenty-Somethings really are an interesting bunch, I hear tell that they have invented a brand new social activity also - I believe they call it sex - what will those darn'd kids think up next.. :0 http://www.hanselman.com/blog/TheFloppyDiskMeansSaveAnd14OtherOldPeopleIconsThatDontMakeSenseAnymore.aspx

I used to run a text only set of BBSs out of the rec room, 3 dial in lines... long time ago.. took a screen shot, added some numbers with Draw and exported to a svg, after sizing the page to the screenshot bitmap and grouping the three added ovals..no transformation to a metafile or any of that, just file>export>svg.. nice
So the numbers:
1 - fellow has been uploading a 6 gig set of files to the lo-portal server, out of China, for over 48 hours now...almost done it looks like.
2 - since I did actually check each download link on the Apache OO download page, ended up with a full set of files... including nice sub-sets that fit on single CD imge (Win, Mac - separate) full En install, all language packs, SDK, SourceTarBall - with 100Megs left to spare
3 - installing the Aoo binary from the upubuntu-com/office ppa talked about today...looks like the folks there included a lot of extras...don't know yet, it's really running slow...hours to go..
so - the crack about kansas... http://lo-portal.us/images/WeArentInKansas-Anymore.svg

.. connector available for Apache OpenOffice
IBM Connections - a good service I suppose, although I've not tried it.
[edit] - well, then again it wouldn't hurt to give their AaaS or is it a PaaS... chuckling does that matter.. and back to the thought - it is easy enough to try the free test drive. In reality the straight commercial (yes proprietary) software is likely imo more attractive to many users in my country then actual freely acquired software and/or services - it imparts both sense of professionalism (reasonably earned or not) while creating a small piece of personal investiture http://www-142.ibm.com/software/dre/h2b/buildh2bpage.wss?synkey=T810457O61742A96&S_CMP=rnav

10 days of having the house to myself - Joyce boarded the train this morning, will meet up with her niece's family in Virginia and the whole lot head directly to the ocean - whilst I stay here with the dog...
So being this is Google Plus and not FB convention would hold that I make this post somehow geeky, and less personal - ok: Joyce executed the final steps during the the Ubuntu 12.04 installation on the HP 110 mini, in preparation for her trip. The first time she has installed any OS, really.
She immediately tried her games...they worked... gave her a 5 minute hands one lesson on how to use Unity - not that she really needed it, I spoke hardly at all and just watch a she quickly and easily figured out what and where for the results she wanted.
I get the use of her Win 7 laptop for the 10 days also...

Dear Diary
Talked with Dan today - he is a proud father :) - I'm struck with the difference that seems stark between those in the extended family whose children are in public school and those in private (or home) schools. In the first, public, it seems not a single instance of foreign language studies (yet they tend to read more literature from non-european authors, always translated to English however), for those in private (and home) it seems they are all studying some other language (Spanish, French and all some Latin) and in at least this one case (Dan's daughter B') part of this study is to read novels, in their native language.

Well, what a shame - the folk sin France continue to show they learn nothing from history.
